About Rocky Point

The village of Rocky Point is unique in that it is not a hamlet or town but rather is the name for a point on Long Island’s north shore. The name was inspired by the many large rocks and boulders (or glacial erratics) that are scattered about the area, some shaped like a point and others in the shape of a rock “rocket”.

The village began with just 18 families and 122 residents in the 1800s, most of whom were farmers who raised cows, sheep and swine as well as crops such as wheat, rye, oats, barley, Indian corn, peas, beans and Irish potatoes. Many also had a hand in owning and sailing schooners for hauling cordwood to market.

Today, Rocky Point is a quaint residential village with an excellent school system and easy access to shopping and restaurants on Nesconset Highway. A short drive to Port Jefferson, and a train ride from the Port Jefferson LIRR station to Penn Station, gives Rocky Point an added advantage over other communities on Long Island.
